Taxing Matters

By William Perez, About.com Guide to Taxes

Did you know you have only three years to claim a tax refund? This little known tax law -- called the statute of limitations -- becomes vitally important this time of year. That's because April 15th, 2008, will be the last day you can file a return and still get a refund for the year 2005. What if you file your '05 return the day after? Your refund will be lost forever, barred from being sent to you under the statute of limitations.

So if you need to file your back taxes, now would be a good time to do so. The IRS can even help you out, by sending you copies of missing tax documents. You can even find free tax preparation help from the AARP, the Armed Forces Tax Council, and volunteer tax preparers at local IRS offices.
